In order to select independent immigrants, Canadian Government has set a selection criterion and a number of specific occupations requiring higher skills have been selected. Individuals with these skills may immigrate provided they meet the selection criteria set by Canadian Government.
This selection criterion is uniform for all prospective immigrants wishing to immigrate to Canada from all over the world, Human Resource Development, Canada, comes up with the list of these occupation in demand upon completion of through research of the job market in Canada. Before approval of Immigration case one has to prove that he/she meets the education, skills and training requirements of the occupation he/she intends to pursue in Canada and that he/she has preformed the duties that a Canadian performs in the particular occupation in Canada. One must also prove that his/her occupational qualifications are at par with the Canadian Standards. After getting assessment done from bodies and education institution, one must also bridge the shortfall in higher qualification and training. Factors like Education & training, Work Experience, Occupation Demand, Approved Employment, Demographics, Age, Knowledge of English and/or French and suitability are taken into consideration in determine chances of successful establishment of an applicant in Canada.
The visa offices based on the above listed factors assess the application and an applicant should score, at least, 70 units of assessment out of possible 107 units.
The visa officers may impose conditions, which an applicant has to meet on landing in Canada. Applicants are also required to clear background checks, security checks, medical examination, meet the financial requirement and prove that they will be able to successfully establish themselves in Canada. The visa officer can reject the case irrespective of number of assessments received by the applicant's received by the applicant pursuant to S.11(3)(b) of Immigration Regulations 1978 if they are not satisfied that the applicant would be able to settle down in Canada.
